The design for the new building in the north-eastern area of Münster University Hospital, adjacent to the existing psychiatric ward, pursues an integrative approach that combines modern architecture with sustainable construction. The design respects the historic brick façade of the psychiatric ward in the neo-baroque style and blends harmoniously into the existing surroundings, despite the tension between buildings from different periods in different materials.

A central element of successful work in a psychiatric clinic is the connection to nature. This is also the aim of our design, which pays particular attention to the protected inner courtyard. The semi-circular shape of the new building creates a gentle connection to the existing building and promotes both visual and functional transparency. This design supports the work of the nursing staff and ensures smooth day-to-day operations.

The inner courtyard serves as a green center that offers spaces for movement, relaxation and encounters. Large windows and light-flooded areas in the entrance area promote a connection to nature and create an inviting atmosphere. In addition, the use of sustainable materials is emphasized, which supports the environmental compatibility of the project.

The clear structure of the building comprises three usage units on the first floor: a closed admission ward, the therapy areas and a sports hall. This arrangement ensures short distances and contributes to a pleasant indoor climate. The patient rooms have a modular design and offer flexible use, while the barrier-free bathrooms ensure comfort.

The new building is designed as a timber construction, with glulam beams and solid wood being used. Reinforced concrete is used for the fire walls to ensure the required safety standards. The roof is equipped with photovoltaic modules that cover a large part of the energy requirements, supported by geothermal systems. These sustainable approaches contribute to the building's status as a plus-energy house. The design combines a well thought-out architectural design with a clear focus on sustainability. Light-flooded rooms, natural materials and a functional layout create an inviting environment that meets the needs of patients and staff.
