RRX Bicycle Expressway

Bicycle Expressway Along the RRX Route – Sustainable Mobility for the Region

The expansion of the RRX railway is more than just a technical infrastructure project—it presents a unique opportunity to connect the entire region in a future-oriented way. As part of this development, an innovative addition is being created: a bicycle expressway running from Duisburg through Düsseldorf to Cologne. This new connection takes advantage of the planned construction work along the RRX route, seamlessly integrating sustainable mobility into the infrastructure in an intelligent and efficient manner.

The bicycle expressway sets a new standard for climate-friendly transportation, making cycling a faster, safer, and more attractive option for commuters. As a pilot project, it has the potential to serve as a model for other regions across Germany, paving the way for a nationwide network of high-performance cycling routes. At the same time, it strengthens local mobility, reduces motorized traffic, and improves accessibility between urban and suburban areas.

Düsseldorf sits at the heart of a dense ecological corridor characterized by rivers, green spaces, and restored natural areas. This network will be further enhanced through targeted reforestation along the RRX route: trees and shrubs will create new habitats for flora and fauna, improve urban air quality, and increase the overall livability of the area.

Another forward-thinking element of this project is its sustainable noise protection. Instead of conventional aluminum noise barriers, modular rammed-earth walls will be constructed along the railway line. This approach combines high functionality with aesthetic value: the walls blend harmoniously into the landscape, effectively reduce noise pollution, and contribute to a healthier microclimate. The rammed-earth material is sourced locally, requires minimal energy for production, and can be easily repaired if needed—offering a long-lasting and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional solutions.

This project represents a holistic advancement in infrastructure development: it creates a fast and safe cycling connection, enhances the region’s ecological quality, and sets new benchmarks in sustainable construction. Mobility for the future is not just about efficiency—it’s about improving quality of life.
