Trade Fair Hamburg
An open, urban fairground
The Neue Messe, Hamburg’s new trade exhibition centre is woven into the layout of the Hanseatic port. It is an exhibition boulevard created as a living and vivid city space along Karolinenstraße. The central connecting axis is the exhibition centre loggia, fully glazed and linking all exhibition areas to one another. The division of the façades and the eave heights of the roof shells integrate harmoniously into the existing city structure.
The concept for the exhibition halls follows a continuous modular principle of order, which allows a high degree of flexibility. The halls are generally naturally ventilated and adequately provided with natural light. The halls can be divided into smaller units by rearranging the rail-mounted partition walls. The exhibition centre is not designed as an accumulation of individual halls, but instead combines differentiated and well-defined urban spaces in a close network with the surrounding buildings.
The concept follows a continuous modular principle of order, which allows a high degree of flexibility. The expansion of the exhibition centre grounds to the west and the associated restructuring provide the opportunity to include the adjacent green space of Schanzenpark - "Planten un Blomen" and the earth ramparts to the old city.
The exhibition halls are constructed from a timber grid shell carried on pinned supports by columns. The roof units span between 20 and 40 metres. The intelligent, efficient and elemental construction allows industrial prefabrication and short construction periods. By introducing cable-trussed girder members with a span of 80 metres, the central columns can be replaced by the apparently supportless post and cable interaction. The absence of central supports makes the halls ideal for international sporting exhibitions and events.
With the Messeplatz Mitte, a third publicly accessible urban space has been created alongside the existing south and east entrances. They interlink the trade fair grounds with the surroundings of the Karolinen and Sternschanzen quarters as well as the surrounding green spaces.
