Conversion of urban industrial sites into high value offices
The new head office of the Stadtwerke Düsseldorf seamlessly integrates the historic turbine hall and other old buildings of the former Fingern power station.
On the boiler house's original site, four office wings, three of them featuring offices on each side of a central corridor, adjoin the old buildings and are separated by a glazed hallway. Glass halls are strategically positioned between the structures to flood the office areas with abundant natural daylight. Steel bridges connect the buildings, and the office spaces are thoughtfully designed to embrace the concept of winter gardens in the fully glazed halls. A total of approximately 800 workplaces have been created. The greenery supports the microclimate and offers the user climatically independent open spaces.
All offices face the atriums and are fully glazed. Except for the corridor glazing, the front sides facing the street and the power plant are closed with glass panels. The atriums serve as a buffer zone for temperature regulation, enabling efficient air circulation through large supply and exhaust air openings in the end facades and along both sides at the upper edge of the roof. Each office allows for a year-round opening of windows to the inner courtyards, providing a refreshing connection to nature.
