Lanserhof Sylt

Largest thatched roof in Europe

On the site of a former officers’ accommodation block in the north of the island, ingenhoven associates built Lanserhof Sylt—a medical health resort with a total of 68 rooms, scheduled for completion in 2020. The Düsseldorf practice is responsible for the design of the building, the entire interior, and the landscape.

In close cooperation with the Office for the Preservation of Historic Buildings and for Nature Conservation, the former officers’ accommodation block from the 1930s will be converted as the central building of the entire Lanserhof ensemble. This existing building with its thatched roof serves as our template for the additional facilities at Lister Watt. This means that all new buildings will have overhanging thatched roofs as a special design feature. Measuring 7,100 square meters in total, Lanserhof Sylt will have the largest thatched roof in Europe.

The buildings to be constructed include the main building with spa area, including indoor and outdoor salt-water pools, and a diagnostics building for the medical care facilities for guests. Three holiday homes uniquely positioned directly at the water’s edge and linked to the medical facilities of the Lanserhof round off the development.

A key focus of the building project is the careful harmonization of the architecture with the surrounding dune landscape in order to avoid any negative impact on the protected landscape and wildlife. The idea was to create a particularly sustainable and healthy building complex in which guests can recuperate and re-energize in harmony with nature. Natural materials without synthetic finishes, and harmonious and plain rooms are the building blocks of a health-promoting architecture that is focused on the holistic recovery of guests. Loggias incorporated in the thatched roof provide privacy and protection from the wind, creating a private outside space for each room. Furthermore, a significant reduction in the energy demand is achieved through the compact layout and a high degree of insulation.

The Lanserhof Group is one of the most modern health resort operators in Europe in the field of medical spa; the Group is the originator of the LANS Med concept. In 2014, ingenhoven associates had already completed Lanserhof Tegernsee, which was followed in 2017 by the Lanserhof at Lans in Austria. 2019 the Lanserhof at The Arts Club in Mayfair London. Similar to the design for the Tegernsee, Lans and at The Arts Club developments, only selected materials will be used, such as insulation, paints, and varnishes that have been tested under ecological and health criteria. The architecture of the buildings is toned down and timeless, with elegant forms and subtle colors.
