DGNB 2019 "Sustainable Building" prize: Freiburg Town Hall nominated
The new town hall in Freiburg im Breisgau has been nominated for Germany’s most important architectural award for sustainable buildings. It is the world’s first public building to net-surplus-energy standard. The building will generate more energy than it uses throughout the year—excess energy is fed into the city’s electricity network.
The DGNB prize is awarded for buildings in which fundamental aspects of sustainability have been incorporated with respect to ecology, social context, and economy in the design, implementation, and operation of the building, and which—in addition—stand out due to their innovative design solutions and special design quality.
The jury commented thus on its decision: "The new Freiburg Town Hall is an outstanding example of how public buildings should set benchmarks for the implementation of ecological and architectural standards." In recognition of the exceptional intent pursued with this project, the DGNB jury nominates the building for the DGNB "Sustainable Building" prize.
The DGNB "Sustainable Building" prize is awarded by the German Sustainable Building Council (Deutsche Gesellschaft für nachhaltiges Bauen, DGNB e.V.). The prize will be awarded for the sixth time in December.
