Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus turns 50
Fifty years ago, on January 16, 1970, the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus at Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz celebrated its grand opening - ingenhoven architects wishes to congratulate Bernhard Pfau’s historic theater on this notable jubilee!
Together with the neighboring Dreischeibenhaus office building, the theater constitutes one of the most important ensembles of post-war architecture in Germany. ingenhoven architects is responsible for the renovation and refurbishment of the theater. Carefully handling the architectural heritage took center stage in the renovation.
Just like the neighboring building, the Schauspielhaus is designed with three layers, stacked horizontally with soft forms rather than a vertical, angular organization. The historical building structure has been preserved and modernized; the roof and façade have been renewed. Areas relevant to the public, including their lighting and furniture, have been refurbished.
ingenhoven architects’ green Kö-Bogen II completes the building ensemble and the Hofgarten park and theater district are extended into the city center, transforming the Gustaf-Gründgens-Platz into a new, social center.
