Container architecture, NRW Forum, Düsseldorf
Containers indicate the success or failure of the world economy—empty container ships are indicative of a downturn, full container ships or even orders for new, even bigger ships, are euphoric images associated with an upturn. The object itself is 2.44 meters wide, 2.59 meters high, and 6.06, or alternatively 12.19, meters long and has been the standardized transport module all over the world since 1956. Thirty million units are currently in use across the world’s oceans. Now the container also fascinates architects. The NRW Forum invited architects, designers, and artists from all over the world to submit designs for container houses. Many of these designs were built as models and supplemented with drawings and photographs. ingenhoven architects were represented in the exhibition for a mobile container system with a design that can be used as a multifunctional unit in crisis areas all over the world.
