Lanserhof Tegernsee

Health-promoting architecture in a cloak of simple elegance

The Lanserhof health resort at Tegernsee Lake in southern Bavaria was successfully completed in the spring of 2014; located in one of the most beautiful natural regions of Europe, it provides 70 rooms and suites for guests who can enjoy preventive and therapeutic treatments. On 21,000 square meters, ingenhoven architects—in cooperation with landscape architect Enzo Enea—have brought to life an impressive architectural vision. With its clear lines and angular geometric shape, the main building integrates seamlessly in the landscape. Light plays an important role in the design. The impression of warmth is gained both by the choice of high-quality, natural materials in the interior, as well as by imposing window fronts, which allow a special degree of brightness.

The architecture emphasizes, and corresponds to, the Lanserhof health philosophy. All architectural decisions were made in accordance with the criteria of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). The idea was to combine the comfort of a luxury hotel with state-of-the-art medical care facilities under one roof.

The layout follows the classical concept of a monastery. "Less is more"—the entire architectural concept follows this principle, and underscores the genius loci with its restrained simple design and natural materials. The wings of the building enclose a landscaped and protected inner courtyard that provides ample space for all guests. It is overlooked from the rooms and guest suites. Large windows and balconies grant open views to the surroundings of the bathhouse, the nearby golf course, and the open landscape. Sliding shutters with slender wooden louvres provide privacy and solar screening to the balconies, thus allowing for open views as well as complete privacy.

The facades were constructed primarily of unfinished and untreated materials, for example larch wood from certified renewable sources. In addition, the external walls of the first two floors have integrated planting.

The guest rooms have been designed as places of retreat. Natural materials support the intended therapeutic effect. They are part of a holistic concept that is aimed at a wholesome, health-promoting architecture with an emphasis on building biology principles, the aim of which is to contribute to the healing of residents. Wooden surfaces and alternating white and warm color shades produce a contemplative ambiance in the treatment and common rooms. The light colors and the simple elegance of the interior emphasize the peaceful, friendly atmosphere of the rooms, where room-high windows and generous loggias reveal panoramic views of the Tegernsee valley.

The successful completion of this project led to three further contracts in Lans and London, and on Sylt, to be placed by the Lanserhof Group with ingenhoven architects.
